A hand-drawn study: one window, four values
A small exercise that begins with shapes and does not need generated imagery.
Draw a dark square for a room and a smaller pale rectangle for its window. Add a sill with a third value, then one foreground object with the fourth. Stop before adding texture.
At the intended display size, check whether the object is still separate from the window. If it merges into the pale area, change its position or value before outlining every edge.
Make a second version with the window light turned down. Comparing the two can help you decide which part of the shape really carries the scene. This is an original exercise description; no finished study image is claimed.
